Sense of Belonging: God Belongs to You

The story of the prodigal son ( see our most recent blog here: Sense of Belonging: Prodigal Son) should provoke at least one question. If an earthly father can have this kind of love for a wayward son, how much more love can our Father in heaven have for us? If He loves us so much, then could it be that He wants to belong to us as well? Could it be that, somehow, our belonging to Him and He belonging to us is the proper way to understand your relationship with Him?

How can we think this is true? God must also have this need, this want of belonging, too. It can’t be only one-sided. It can’t be that He did everything He did to redeem and justify and sanctify us, without also fulfilling His own longing for our fellowship, too.  

Look at what He did so that we have a pathway to come to Him. If your image of God is that He is some distant, far-off, angry God waiting for the first chance He has to reject you from His presence, then let me encourage you to review the facts of His effort, his work, His cost to include you with him in His Kingdom.  

In fact, He spent enormous resources so you can enter His Kingdom and receive His mercy, grace, and love.  

No one gives everything they have to purchase something and then simply throws it away because it isn’t good enough. See Hebrews 11 and the faith Hall of Fame. No one noted in this list was perfect. All of them were seriously flawed. And yet we see that their faith was counted as righteousness. In these stories, you can see your own outcome. By grace through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ, you are not only invited into the Kingdom but by your acceptance of this invitation, you are also included. You belong to Him and His eternal Kingdom.  

We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them!
