Honor Your Mother and Father Pt 2

It should come as no surprise to us that God has addressed our relationships with our parents.  In fact, He is quite clear how we are to treat them. The verses below are among many that cover our relationships with our folks.  We’ll discuss them more fully as we progress through this chapter.

Exodus 20, Ephesians 6 and Colossians 3 all command us to honor our parents.  We’ll focus on the passage in Ephesians today

  • Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother…”

  • Ephesians 6:3, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother…"

  • Colossians 3:20, “Children, obey your parents in everything…”

It’s interesting to note that this one command is so important that a beneficial promise is made to those who keep it.  Look at the promises and benefits that will be fulfilled when you begin to change how you speak and think about your parents:

  • Exodus 20:12, “…so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

  • Ephesians 6:3, “…that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.”

  • Colossians 3:20, “…for this pleases the Lord.”

As we talked about the other day, this commandment has varying degrees of difficulty for everyone.

If this easy for you, I encourage to persist in the discipline of honoring your parents.

For many others, this commandment is quite difficult.  It’s so important that you start.

Let me encourage you today to start to honor your parents.

At the least, you can say you wouldn’t be here with them.  As the old saying goes, “The longest journey begins with the first step!”

Thank you.  God bless you - on your journey today!
