Sense of Belonging Part 2: Belonging to God

We’ve used the last few blogs to announce the latest publications by From Here Books.  Today we’ll return to posting blogs related to the book, From Here… By Faith

The most recent blog from this series can be reviewed here: https://www.lennyo.org/from-here-blogs/sense-of-belonging-sharing-life

In that blog we discussed 3 aspects of understanding the idea of what it means to have a sense of belonging.

  1. Knowing the person or people you think of when you think of belonging. This knowing is reciprocal. You know them and they know you.

  2. Loving/Accepting, that is valuing, inviting, etc. those you believe you belong with and to.

  3. Sharing life, that is, participating in the life of another and them participating in your  life.

What we’ve discussed so far can be thought of as belonging in the context of Yamuna relationship, considering the limits of human beings to understand in any greater depth. But, what if we add God and His unlimited capacity for love to the mix?

Here’s a question to consider.  How able is anyone in the world really able to love unconditionally?  Here’s how my friend Tom Belt responded to the question:

Since God alone can KNOW and LOVE us unconditionally, we can only BELONG to God. We can say we belong to each other, but that is probably just us enjoying God’s “belonging” together with each other. We say we belong to others, but even in the best senses (marriage & true friendship), it can only approximate God’s knowledge of us, his love for us, and the depths of life that we come to participate in when He shares his life with us. No other belonging can compare. But even with God, belonging still amounts to KNOWING, LOVING, and SHARING LIFE (which includes sharing.

We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them!
