Do You Feel Like You Belong?
Have you ever felt a “sense of belonging”?
When have you thought to yourself, “I feel like I belong?” Remember what’s been said about feelings in the context of this question. Feeling like - sensing - you belong isn’t an emotional feeling. You may feel emotional when you think about it, but those feelings are secondary to knowing this sense of belonging.
I feel like I belong to my family and to my close friends. I don’t feel like I belong to or with most people I know. I measure this feeling of belonging against things I can observe, like the commitment we have to each other, to have each other’s backs, to be there when one of us is going through a hard time. How would you measure these things in your life?
What is your best story of belonging?
One of my best stories of feeling like I belong is when I work with friends, serving the attendees of an annual conference. I don’t see these friends except for when we serve together at this conference, yet I always feel amazing love and acceptance, care and commitment.
What do you think of the idea of a feeling, like the “sense of belonging”?
I have lived life feeling alone and I have lived life feeling like I have people with me whatever I am going through. I much prefer having friends!
This feeling or sense of belonging is a natural outcome of placing your belief in Jesus Christ. If you’ve met Him and still feel like you don’t belong go to your church and ask about small groups or how to serve. These are two concrete, easy to do exercises that will have a good outcome!
We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them!
