Opposite of Faith?
I’ve heard several messages from people I respect who have noted that the opposite of faith is fear. One preacher, Kris Vallotton, says it this way: “Fear is faith in a negative outcome.” Let me encourage you to focus on growing in relationship with God in such a way that you’re able to overcome the fear of doing something you believe He wants you to do because you’ve come to know Him so well you trust He will answer your prayer and support your action.
The thing is, if faith is foundational to your walk with the Lord and your citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven, do you think it might be important to understand it better and grow in it? In other words, do you think it might be a good idea to take a more active role in your own growth? Would it be better to be active when considering your faith? Or would it be better to be passive?
James has written about faith in such a way that I almost always feel uncomfortable when I read his letter. His word is encouraging. Or damning. It requires you to think pretty hard about your own walk with God. And that is what exhortations are meant for. They are meant to stir you to action, and often, the way to do this is to make you feel uncomfortable in your current position.
We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them!
