What Do You Believe?

BF 6.4

Once you accept the Word, that you have entered His house by faith, and that by faith you have been given grace (Ephesians 2:10), you can conclude that you belong.

Having accepted the above, you can then say this:

Because I believe in Him, I have relationship with Him.

In this chapter, let’s focus on the first part of the statement, “Because I believe in Him,” by asking this question:

What do you believe that makes you a Christian?

If you’ve been through some kind of catechism, then you’ll know the Apostles’ Creed and maybe even the Nicene Creed. For our purposes, we’ll take a brief look at the Apostles’ Creed.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen

The Apostles’ Creed sets forth the essential principles that Christians believe. It sums up what you believe that makes you a Christian. It is your belief in these statements that makes you a believer. Without getting too historical here, the Creed was created to solve a couple of problems, mostly heresies about the Deity of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. In addition, the Creed made it easy for people who couldn’t read to cite what they believed so they could compare it to some of the teachings of the day and know whether a teacher, pastor or priest was properly teaching about Christ.

We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them!
