What Makes You a Christian? Part 2
What do you believe that makes you a Christian?
I am concerned that many don’t know how to answer the question, “What makes you a Christian?” While there are several ways to answer the question depending on how you perceive it, I am looking for an answer from you that identifies what you believe (know) about what Jesus did for you through His death on the Cross, His shed blood and His resurrection.
Inn ourmmost recent blog, we posted the Apostle’s Creed as a great example of what people believe that makes them a Christian.
Do you know the Apostles’ Creed or Nicene Creed from Catholic or Lutheran catechism? What was your catechism like? How did catechism help you in your walk with Christ?
I’ve heard from some of my friends that thinking about the Apostle’s Creed brings up bad memories or a reliance on too much tradition. If you would let me encourage you, I suggest you ask the Lord how to overcome those kinds of feelings. It isn’t that they aren’t valid. It’s that those feelings may keep you from learning the central ideas that Christians believe. And not knowing these central ideas can be harmful to your faith, especially in this day and age.
If you were to avoid learning or counting on the Creed for a basic understanding of the Gospel of Christ, how would you do it?
Try this: Write a 2-minute speech about what you believe that makes you a Christian, what would you write? How would it be different from the Apostles’ Creed?
When you have written the 2 minute speech compare it to the Creed and see if you’ve captured those essential components. If you haven’t captured them, you may see that you have an opportunity to learn more about the Gospel. If you’re able to do that, then you should be able to determine that you can place your faith in Christ because of what He’s done for you and me.
We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them
