What Makes You a Christian?
What do you believe that makes you a Christian?
I am concerned that many don’t know how to answer the question, “What makes you a Christian?” While there are several ways to answer the question depending on how you perceive it, I am looking for an answer from you that identifies what you believe (know) about what Jesus did for you through His death on the Cross, His shed blood and His resurrection.
So. How do you answer the question? Can you answer the question?
Again, while there are differences among denominations, even Catholicism and Protestantism, the simplest sum of what makes you and me Christians is described in the Apostle’s Creed.
That is the true value of learning and knowing the Creed
“The Apostles’ Creed sets forth the essential principles that Christians believe. It sums up what you believe that makes you a Christian. It is your belief in these statements that makes you a believer. …The Creed made it easy for people who couldn’t read to cite what they believed so they could compare it to some of the teachings of the day and know whether a teacher, pastor or priest was properly teaching about Christ.”
The value in knowing this Creed today is to identify the main principles Christians of all denominations agree are the foundation of faith in Christ.
What is the Apostle’s Creed?
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
This Creed sets forth the most important items or statements of faith so you are able to easily memorize them and repeat them at any time. Knowing these things will help you identify if someone was to preach to you another (false) gospel.
We have works to do and we’re going to need faith to do them
