Truth and Love Will Set You Free

Last week we said, “Without truth, love can’t be enough.”

Jesus talked about truth and its work:

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32).

If what Jesus told the Jews was true 2000 years ago, it is true for us today.

If what Jesus said was true then, and it is true today, then we must establish that we are his disciples if the truth is to set us free. How can we establish that we are his disciples?  If we are reading His Word and praying and fellowshipping with other believers we are at least moving in the right direction to become his disciples.  The degree to which we are really His disciples is more a function of how well we hold to his teaching.  The real measure of this is in what He called the greatest commandment: To love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

“Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”  If you know the truth of His love for you, expressed in the cross and the power of His resurrection, you can feel safe in telling Him all of your troubles and sins.  You can tell Him the truth about your life.  These two things go hand-in-hand.  The teachings of Christ reveal His love for you. You can feel safe enough to tell Him the truth about your life because you believe in His love.  You repent because you trust that he will forgive you:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (See I John 1:9).  And you’ll find the freedom His death and resurrection provide.

Thank you.  God bless you - on your journey today!
